Imagine you were a 12 year old witch with a cat-turned-teenager for a babysitter and a garden gnome for a watch dog.

Now imagine the aforementioned babysitter licking her paws-- er, hands, and lapping up milk from a bowl.

And in what glorious state is all of this taking place? The best one, of course. Because not only is R.C. Alexander a funny and imaginative guy, he also knows what's up when it comes to setting his book in an awesome city.

We can't wait to welcome Mr. R. C. and laugh at all of his jokes. We're sure he'll have lots of them, because his book, Unfamiliar Magic, made us giggle, chortle, chuckle, and even guffaw.

Desi is a witch. And she knows she could be a great witch—if only her mom would teach her any spells. Unfortunately, Desi’s mom insists that they try to appear as normal as possible. And that’s not easy when you have granulated lizard wings in the kitchen pantry and a doltish, lumbering golem watching sports in the living room. When her mom leaves town under mysterious circumstances, it should be Desi’s perfect opportunity to explore magic on her own. But Desi has been left in the care of the most unusual babysitter of all time: her pet cat—also her mom’s familiar—now transformed into a teenage girl named Cat. And Cat has only three goals: Learn how to eat sushi with her new, hairless monkey paws, get the awkward boy next door to pay for her sushi, and keep Desi out of trouble. And that means no magic. Yeah, right! R. C. Alexander’s debut novel is a hilarious and high-spirited fantasy that will help readers see family, friendship, and sisterhood in a whole new light—and remind them that there’s magic to be found in even the most familiar places.

“Alexander’s debut mixes a comical magical adventure with a light-hearted teen romance within a contemporary setting. . . . [T]his is an entertaining, quick read full of romance, shopping and magic.”
— Kirkus Reviews
