With plenty of time at home to peruse her personal bookshelves, our bookseller Stacy was inspired to share some of her absolutely, hands-down, all-time favorite chapter books from childhood. They are so beloved that some copies are the actual ones she held as a kid. All of these titles have withstood the test of time and are still published and available today.
My #1 fave book from childhood! I was in awe of Sara Crewe and how she handled herself with grace during so much hardship and cruelty. And I really envied that attic window.
I loved every book in this series but it all begins with this little gem. I adored Betsy's outgoing and spunky personality and identified with shy, reserved, Tacy. Following along on their adventures both big and small were a delight.
Because I was such a rule follower as a child (not much has changed) I LOVED Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's clever and humorous cure's for children's bad behaviors.
The first in the Little House series. Growing up in MN, I was captivated by these historical stories that took place in my own back yard.
As a curious, watchful kid myself, I was completely identified with Harriet and admired her skills as a spy!
My first chapter book with anthropomorphic animals - I was utterly enthralled. I loved sweet Mrs. Frisby and her friendship with the highly intelligent rats (who escaped from the labs at Nimh) who came to her rescue.
Running away from home and hiding in a major museum in NYC - and getting caught in a mystery - how much cooler could it get?!
