Saturday, May 2: Independent Bookstore Day

Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with Wild Rumpus! Starting at 11AM, learn how to paint a sheep with author and shepherdess Joan Jarvis Ellison. Next, have your face painted to look like a sheep by Peace Paint with Ellie, Andrea, and Molly. Finally, have your picture taken as a sheep with a sheep! It's a sheep painting party, complete with two real, live lambs!

We'll also give away Nice Ride passes to the first five people who inquire, which you can use to get to other bookstores. Don't know where the other bookstores are located? Never fear! We'll have free Twin Cities independent bookstore maps.

But wait, there's more! For one day, and one day only, a number of very limited, unique, word-based items and books will be available in more than 400 independent stores across the country. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill signed first editions--these are literature-based art projects, unique books, and collector’s items created for this event only. You can’t get them before. You can’t get them after. And you can’t get them online. But you can get them at your favorite independent bookstore(s).

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.

Join your fellow book lovers on Independent Bookstore Day to celebrate real people in real places.
